This is the third edition of Starr's classic treatise on the navy of the Roman Empire. Starr himself only revised the book once, in 1959, but M.C.J. Miller added a more up-to-date bibliography (1993) and a number of plates to illustrate the text. The book is mainly about the ports, organizational structures, crews, deployments, and uses of the Roman imperial fleets. While the book's focus is on the age of the Roman Empire, with particular attention lavished on the reforms of Augustus and Claudius, an introductory chapter deals with sea power in the Late Republic and serves to set the stage for further discussion.
