This book is based on Johannes Kromayer and Georg Veith's seminal work on ancient battlefields, Schlachten-Atlas zur antiken Kriegsgeschichte (1922). Unlike an earlier 2008 edition, it translates much of their accompanying text into English and includes a number of fold-out versions of the original maps, which have also been annotated in English and are reproduced in full-colour.

Below is a excerpt from the original authors description of their work: Research on military history, including during ancient times, currently enjoys increased general interest. In the last decades of the previous century and the first of this one, topographic research on ancient military history became highly popular, with detailed analyses in this field taking up countless pages. This was regardless of whether they pertained to single battles or longer periods showing the development of the art of war.

This make it almost impossible for anyone unfamiliar with this subject to find his or her way around the abundance of scattered literature and to separate the wheat from the - regrettably plentiful - chaff. It seems, therefore, that it is high time that a critical conclusion be reached on what the work of the two past centuries has shown, and to unveil this for our professional colleagues and members of the public interest in the history of the art of war.
