The Macedonian pike phalanx was a terrifying and effective formation on the ancient battlefield, provided it could get into close combat with its enemy. Ancient cavalry armies were notoriously good at avoiding just that, until they had worn down the infantry formation with missiles. How did the phalanx deal with such armies?
