Issue 102 - The Battle of Mantinea
This entry was posted on May 1, 2019.
In issue 102 of Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy, we focus on the Peloponnesian War (for background see our sister magazine Ancient Warfare issues X.1 and X.6). Despite its long duration, the war featured only two proper phalanx battles and one of them, the battle of Mantinea in 418 BC, was officially during a time of peace. Yet, it is the only battle which features Spartan and Athenian hoplites (albeit only a few of the latter) confronting each other on the field of battle. So we really couldn't do without.
