A new editor for Medieval World

After several years as an image researcher for Medieval Warfare magazine, Dr. Alice Sullivan took over as editor in 2022. She played a pivotal role in conceiving and relaunching the magazine as Medieval World: Culture & Conflict, with the first issue debuting in May of that year. Now, after four years of dedication at the helm of MW, Dr. Sullivan has moved on from Karwansaray Publishers to pursue new challenges. We are very grateful for her hard work and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

Over the past few months, we received dozens of applications for the role of editor. While the pool of academics who excel both in cutting-edge research and in communicating it accessibly to a broad audience seems unfortunately small, we were lucky to find several outstanding candidates. After multiple rounds of interviews, we’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Rhiannon Garth Jones will be the new editor of Medieval World. She’ll introduce herself and share her vision for the magazine in more detail in the next blog—once she’s wrapped up her current commitments—but she wanted to take a moment to say hi already.

Hi all!

I'm Dr. Rhiannon Garth Jones, the incoming editor at Medieval World: Culture and Conflict and I'm delighted to be joining this fantastic team! I'm a popular scholar, writer, editor, and global medieval historian. I have a PhD in early Islamic art, architecture, and material culture and the shared cultural, imperial, material, and religous traditions across medieval Afro-Eurasia. My teaching covers an even broader spectrum, from 5th century Italy to 16th century Ethiopia, and my recent book, All Roads Lead to Rome, runs across 2,000 years of global history. I also have an editorial background in science magazines, technology comms, and sports journalism. Most importantly, I have a life-long love for public scholarship, particularly communicating academic expertise to popular audiences with enjoyable prose and beautiful imagery – so I'm understandably excited to be joining Medieval World.

I'll save a proper introduction for the next blog, as well as some thoughts on how I hope to build and expand on Medieval World magazine's excellent reputation for historical expertise and engaging features. For now, I just want to say hi to the Medieval World community! In the meantime, you can find out more about me on BlueSky (@rhigarthjones.bsky.social). You can find the magazine there too!

Speak soon,

Rhiannon

Hello Rhiannon
As a long time contributor and reader to Medieval World welcome to this marvellous magazine.

Brendan Farrell makes a good point is suggesting some Welsh, Irish (and Scottish) material from time to time and there is much to write about including cultural, religious topics and the influence of leading individuals in those countries on wider British and European civilization. I wrote two articles on the Crecy campaign in which the Welsh participation was crucial and the influence of the Irish missionaries on the religious and educational development of England was substantial.

Hello Rhiannon,

Well done! It would be nice to see some Irish content in the magazine or even Welsh! especially considering the upcoming
Norman commemorations.

Best of luck

Brendan Farrell

Congratulations Dr. Jones! MW is an excellent magazine. I am a long time subscriber and contributed an article to the recent edition. I look forward to seeing how you shape the future of this prestigious and popular magazine.
