EDITORIAL PLAN
Medieval World: Culture & Conflict is published every two months. The magazine features about 10-14 articles that cover a theme and special topics related to the history and material culture of the Middle Ages.
Leading scholars and early career researchers from all over the world contribute content to this publication. We generally extend invitations for articles related to the theme, but we also accept proposals. Anyone can submit a proposal for an article, either related to a particular theme or to a special column (see below). We encourage early career scholars (recent PhDs and graduate students) to contact us and let us know about their research.
If you wish to submit a proposal (title/subtitle, abstract, and a brief CV), please contact the editor.
With a new editor at the helm, we will be conducting a review of what works well, what could be improved, what could be added, and what doesn’t work for you. To that end, your thoughts and feedback are especially welcome in these first months. Not every idea will be feasible, for many reasons, but seeing the magazine through your eyes will help us think in more nuanced ways about how to proceed. The medieval world was filled with connections, interactions, and longstanding shared traditions as well as examples of the hyper-local, innovative, and strikingly unusual. Rhiannon is a big believer that any approach to medieval history should allow for all parts of that spectrum so please contact her with your ideas and thoughts.
The upcoming themes have been slightly revised. Other future themes depend partially on reader feedback but we are currently considering the Timurids, Al-Andalus, Travel/Exploration, Pilgrimage and Reception of Rome.
Upcoming Themes:
MWCC.24 Unseen Empires: less well-known medieval empires – those built on culture, diplomacy, and the economy rather than conquest.
MWCC.25 Harnessing Nature: human societies have always shaped the natural world and the medieval period was filled with innovation and experimentation.
MWCC.26 Mesoamerica: this fascinating historical epoch includes cultures such as the Maya, Mexica (Aztec), Mixtec, and Teotihuacan
