Issue 141: Only one way out
Once the First Punic War ended, the situation in Cisalpine Gaul (roughly the Po Valley and the top of the Italian Peninsula) was fairly calm. Steady Roman expansion into the area, however, gradually began to provoke the Celtic tribes into action. The Boii and Insubres resented the encroachment of Roman citizens onto their territory, and in 225 BC, they hired the Gaesatae, a mercenary tribe from Transalpine Gaul, to come help evict the Romans from the area. Unsurprisingly, the Romans responded as if stung by a swarm of bees. A treaty was struck with the Carthaginians to prevent issues in Spain - at least for the moment - and two consular armies were set in motion to meet the Celts.
