EDITORIAL PLAN

Ancient Warfare magazine is not written by in-house editors. We commission articles from expert authors all over the world. Anyone can submit a proposal for an article, either related to a particular theme (see below) or not. If you wish to submit a proposal (title/subtitle, abstract, and a brief biography of yourself), please contact the editor.

Ancient Warfare 106

Theme: Late-Archaic Greek Warfare
Release: March 2026

"To phalanx or not to phalanx, that is the question". In the sixth century BC, reforms suggest attempts to create a larger pool of heavy infantry and poets emphasize solidarity in the phalanx. At the same time, this is the short-lived period of the near-completely armoured men of bronze, apparently design to fight in single combat. So which is it?

Ancient Warfare 107

Theme: Augustus' German campaigns
Release: May 2026

Apart from the Varian Disaster, we have barely addressed the first emperor's campaigns into Germania Magna. High time we changed that. This would be a great opportunity to look at Germanic warriors, early Imperial legionaries and auxiliaries, complex logistics, some famous characters, and battles.

Ancient Warfare 108

Theme: Alexander the Great, pt.2
Release: July 2026

We looked at the rise of Macedonia, the campaign into Asia Minor, and the Siege of Tyre in past issues. Now, we have come to the great showdown between Alexander and Darius. With fantastic numbers of troops, contradictory sources, and a lunar eclipse, this should have plenty of meat for us to chew on.

Ancient Warfare 109

Theme: Stratagems and trickery
