Official launch for Charles XII: Warrior King
On October 3rd, 2018, Charles XII: Warrior King was officially released. The launch event was held in Stockholm, Sweden at the House of Nobility (Riddarhuset). Attended by an international audience, the official presentation included a panel discussion. This was moderated by John B. Hattendorf, Charles XII's chief editor, and included contributions by several of the book's authors. Åsa Karlsson (one of the book's co-editors) first framed the king in general terms and explained the contributions to the work by Swedish academics. Next, Gunnar Åselius looked at the difficulties and long odds that Sweden faced during the Great Northern War, while at the same time recognising that modern views of Sweden's chances of success are coloured by better information about resources and manpower, which were not available in Charles XII's time. Finally, Lars Ericson Wolke examined the role of Swedish fleets and naval warfare during the period, an aspect of the Great Northern War that often gets overlooked.
After the panel discussion, guests enjoyed a reception with cocktails, and were given an early opportunity to purchase copies of Charles XII. This was followed by a formal dinner for select guests. The evening came to a close with coffee and cake being offered in one of the Riddarhuset's more informal sitting rooms.
