News update 12 June 2014

This is our news update for Thursday 12 June. I hope that some of you have seen part 2 of the well made documentary about the battle of Bannockburn which was broadcasted on 9 June 2014, 9 pm on BBC2 (apparently in Scotland only, strangely enough). For those of you who haven’t, you can always order our latest issue IV.3  , which focuses on the First War of Scottish Independence.

My favorite piece this week is this well made trailer for a Swiss jousting event. Check it out below:

Die grossen Ritterspiele von Schaffhausen, 10.–20. Juli 2014 from Museum Allerheiligen SH on Vimeo.

Moreover, I’d like to share some notable events which happened in the Middle Ages on the 12th of June:

  • During the Peasant Revolt of 1381, the peasants first arrived at Blackheath, infamous for being a recurrent centre of peasant revolts in the Late Middle Ages. More information on the revolt can be found in Mike Ingram’s article in Medieval Warfare III.1  .
  • On the second day of the Battle of Jargeau , Joan of Arc manages to capture Jargeau and its English commander William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk. It was the first offensive action of the French after the siege of Orleans (for more information, read Medieval Warfare IV.2  ), and it resulted in a clear victory for the French. During the battle, Joan, who would be captured about a year later (see Gareth Williams’ webarticle), was hit on her helmet by a stone, which split in two on impact.
