Issue 118 - The Battle of Calatafimi

Statistically, the ‘Sicilian defense’ is a very successful opening for Black in chess. Unfortunately for the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Giuseppe Garibaldi proved in 1860 that statistics only indicate a probability. His bold invasion of Sicily with some 1000 motivated volunteers met a confused and lethargic defense that gave him his first victory on the way to Italian unification. WSS 118 has more on Garibaldi, as well as ideas and scenarios for battles in Sicily from ancient history to World War Two.
