Issue 140: Benedict Arnold's greatest victory

The Battle of Freeman's Farm on September 19, 1777 put a stop to General Burgoyne's attempts to march south towards Albany. He ordered his army to dig in on the old battlefield, erecting redoubts on several hills facing the American army. Though they received news of Howe's victory at Brandywine, the situation for the British army slowly grew worse. On October 7, Burgoyne ordered a reconnaissance in force towards the American lines.
