Besides the unusually rich illustrations (over 190 colored images: illustrations, artifacts, maps, monuments), this book offers a fresh view on the Dacian-Roman wars, trying to eliminate as much as possible from the ideological nationalist ballast that came to burden the Romanian view of history. I gathered and adapted most archaeological findings and historical studies, old and new, for a wider public of history lovers. I avoided too much speculation on events that remain unclear for history, but I made frequent use of words like "perhaps" and "probably". On occasion, I ventured possible scenarios for the rare instances when historical or archaeological sources were more generous. Some readers may be surprised to discover that events or their interpretation are not at all as learned in school or seen in dramatized movies, in old books and magazines or even in certain museums. What is shown in this book is my attempt to come closer to a historical truth we all search for (at least declaratively).

A regular contributor to Ancient Warfare Magazine, Radu Oltean really gives the best of him for this book. Using the Trajan Column as an inspiration for his illustrations, he writes a very interesting account of the first of the Dacian Wars, with numerous details and case scenarios. I'm looking forward for volume 2 ! Review by GS (Posted on 5/7/2016)

‘Dacia - The Roman Wars’ by Radu Oltean is truly a superb piece of work. The author sets out the latest archeological evidence in a straightforward way for the general reader, offering alternative scenarios when the evidence is contestable. However, what gives this book the ‘wow’ factor is the illustrations. They come in several forms. Photographs of the sites today; exhibits from museums; clear colour maps; and best of all, colour plates that reconstruct the forts and battles of the campaign. An excellent overview of a bitter protracted war for which little written information has come down to us from ancient times.
I would have like to have seen more discussion around Dacian arms and armour and their tactics; perhaps this will be remedied in Part 2 or may be a reflection of paucity in finds?
