The Sengoku period was coming towards its closing years. As Oda Nobunaga slowly realised his goal of setting up a tame shogun, he found that there was an ever-increasing hostility to his expanding power and influence. By 1568 this was beginning to coalesce around the rival daimyo and, ironically, the religious Ikko-ikki.
