Starting with the raid on the Lindisfarne monastery in 793, England experienced about 300 years of raids, assaults, and invasions by the Vikings. Their ‘Great Heathen Army’ was successful in conquering large parts of the region and imposing Viking rule. However, many native Englishmen fought back - especially Alfred, king of Wessex.
